Service cracks wireless passwords from the cloud

A security researcher has unveiled a low-cost servicepot pourri for penetration testers that#x checks the security of wireless networks by running passwords against a 135-million-word dictionary.

The WPA Cracker is a cloud-based service that accesses a 400-CPU cluster. For $34, it can run a password against all 135 million entries in about 20 minutes. Those willing to wait 40 minutes can pay $17 to access the system at half mode.

In addition to operating in the cloud, the service is also notable because its dictionary has been set up specifically for cracking Wi-Fi Protected Access passwords. While Windows, Unix and other systems allow short passwords, WPA pass codes must contain a minimum of eight characters. Its entries pot pourriuse a variety of words,Metal halide lamps, common phrases and “elite speak” that have been compiled with WPA networks in mind.

WPA Cracker is used by capturing a wireless network’s handshake locally and then uploading it, along with the network name. The service then compares the PBKDF2, or Password-Based Key Derivation Function, against the dictionary. The approach makes sense, considering each handshake is salted using the network’s ESSID, a technique that makes rainbow tables only so useful.

Microsoft plants Bing on Google-free Chinese Androids
Motorola will soon push Microsoft’s Bing search engine onto Android phonesartificial pumpkin in China, katana, after announcing an alliance with the Redmond #xsoftware giant that will see Bing appear on Androids across the globe.

In the wake of this Moto-Microsoft pact, Google has confirmed with The Reg that it has barred the use of its mobile applications on Android phones from Chinese carriers, leaving the likes of Motorola to use alternatives.

On Thursday morning, Motorola said that before the end of the quarter, artificial pumpkinit would add a Bing browser bookmark and a Bing search widget to new phones based on Google’s open source OS as well as handsets already in the market. Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it appears that Bing will not be the default provider on the devices’ browser search box.

The pact will also put Microsoft’s Bing Maps service on Motorola phones.

Motorola’s announcement comes amid ongoing confusion over Google’s position in China - and thus Motorola’s relationship with the Mountain View web giant. In mid-January, Google threatened to shutter its China operation in response to an alleged Chinese hack attack on its internal systems, and days later, it said that it would postpone its launch of two Android phones on the Chinese carrier China Unicom - one from Samsung and one from Motorola - saying it would be “irresponsible” to let the launch proceed.

Google #xsays it has made the decision to “no longer” censor results on its Chinese search engine, but it continues to censor results artificial pumpkinwhile discussing its position with government authorities.

Behind the Music of Halo 3: ODST

Though they’ve collaborated on music Microfiber clothfor well over a decade — creating scores for games ranging from Myth: The Fallen Lords to Oni — it was the Halo franchise that finally catapulted composers Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori #xto fame. Since the first game’s release, the iconic music from the series has been performed live in concert by some of the world’s finest orchestras and choirs, sold untold numbers of soundtrack albums, and become some of the most widely recognized music in games.

With the impending release of Halo 3: ODST, fans can expect to hear O’Donnell and Salvatori work their magic again, along with composers C. Paul Johnson (Halo 3) and Stan LePard (Crimson Skies), to round out the game’s more than three hours of music. But despite the Halo name, this latest score is set to make an interesting departure from the previous games’ compositions, with a darker, more introspective tone. To find out what went into making the game’s music and what players can expect, we spoke with the men behind the music.

As Bungie’s audio director, O’Donnell started composing Halo 3: ODST’s first themesMicrofiber cloth last year while the company was still creating the game’s announcement trailer. As usual, he wrote the main thematic work, which he then shared with the other composers to see if it inspired any different approaches. Chicago-based Salvatori joined the project in early February this year, helping bring the music to completion roughly two months later in a whirlwind of activity.

“Marty had started writing before me, and sent me some of his ideas,” Salvatori explains. “I picked a few that I felt I could add some magic to, and worked on those. I also came up with several ideas that I sent to Marty that he put his hands on. Once he felt we had enough material, I flew to Seattle and we spent about two weeks together finishing arrangements and, the last couple days I was there, recording live musicians. It was intense because a lot of work was compacted into a fairly short time, but it was a blast!”

Those live musicians were, of course, from the Northwest Sinfonia, the orchestra that has recorded more video game music than any ensemble outside of Prague — including the scores for Medal of Honor and World of Warcraft. Halo 3: ODST’s soundtrack #xmakes use of a 60-piece orchestra, which the composers configured in various waysMicrofiber cloth during the two days of recording at Seattle’s Studio X. Private companies, lobbyists seek to differentiate

Private companies, lobbyists seek to differentiate Security barriersworthy projects from earmark requests
As lawmakers imposed another restriction Thursday on congressional earmarks, private companies and lobbyists#x defended their work in securing federal money for what they deemed worthy projects.

The private interests said that much of their work — what amount to no-bid grants secured through Congress — was unfairly being lumped in with earmarks that were obtained through well-timed donations to key lawmakers.

“I understand what the debate is about. But I think that, as Congress reviews the policy on appropriations, there’s an opportunity to differentiate those like ours, which are looking for a win-win use of taxpayer dollars,” said Benson P. Lee, president and chief executive of Technology Management in Cleveland. His company received a $500,000 earmark to commercialize a biofuel system.

But such firms face a different political environment now. A day after House Democrats announced Security barriersan end to giving earmarks to any private company, House Republicans said Thursday that their entire 178-member conference will not seek any congressional earmarks this year, swearing off even those for nonprofits and municipal authorities in lawmakers’ districts.

Calling the earmark process “a symbol of a broken Washington,” House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (Ohio) said the Republican move is a key step in demonstrating fiscal restraint, even if it does not lead to a reduction in federal spending.

“Republicans took an important step toward showing the American people we’re serious about reform by adopting an immediate,DVD Ripper, unilateral ban on all earmarks. But the more difficult battle lies ahead, and that’s stopping the spending spree in Washington that is saddling our children and grandchildren with trillions of dollars in debt,” Boehner said.

Earmarks are inserted into the dozen annual bills that fund the federal government, to the tune of about $16 billion a year — a small slice of the more than $1 trillion in discretionary spending that Congress approves each year. While curbing earmarks will do little to reduce the massive federal deficit, leaders of both parties have declared that the process has too often rewarded those who hire the best lobbyists#x and who make Security barrierswell-timed political donations to senior lawmakers.

Long-Term Use of Osteoporosis Drugs Linked to Frac

Long-Term Use of Osteoporosis Drugs Linked to Fractures
Long-term use of oral drugs prescribed to keep osteoporosis at bay may be associated with unusual fractures of the thigh bone, two new studies suggest.

The research is not the first to link the drugs,Cord embroidery known as bisphosphonates,#x with unusual fractures. Other research has found pros and cons, with the drugs reducing breast cancer risk but increasing the risk of painful jaw problems.

“Bisphosphonates are a good first start,” said study co-author, Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. “Used beyond a certain point, yet to be determined, they may actually be bad.”

The research is scheduled for presentation Thursday at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ annual meeting in New Orleans, but at least one expert is saying both new studies are flawed.

In his study, Rosenwasser and his colleagues focused on 112 women, all past menopause, who had osteoporosis, which weakens bones, making them more likely to break. Of them, 62 took osteoporosis drugs — in this case, Cord embroiderybisphosphonates — for four years or more, and 50 took calcium and vitamin D supplements only.

The researchers took bone scans to evaluate the thigh bone structure.

“That allowed us to show changes in the buckling ratio,” said Rosenwasser. #x”That’s a fancy way of saying the propensity for the bone to break.”

They found that long-term use of the drugs — at least four years — was associated with an increase in the buckling ratio, reflecting a higher risk for fracture.

In another study, Dr. Joseph M. Lane, chief of the metabolic bone disease service at the Hospital for Special Surgery and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, and his colleagues compared bone quality in biopsies from patients who had been on bisphosphonates for several years with those not on the drugs.
They looked at bone biopsies taken from the thigh bones of 21 women, all past menopause, who had suffered fractures at the site. Nine had not taken the drugs, while 12 had, for an average of 8.5 years.

“We took bone from close to the fracture site,” Lane said.#x The women on the bisphosphonates,Cord embroidery they found, had “old” bone. Normally, Lane said, bone is about 20 percent new, 60 percent middle-age and 20 percent old. “This was 90 percent old bone, suggesting the body is not turning over the bone,” Lane said.

Director says NHTSA responded properly on Toyota’s problems
The chief of the nation’s auto safety regulators rejected criticism on Thursday that his agency made mistakes and responded too slowly to years of complaints regarding runaway Toyotas.

David L. Strickland, Beadsadministrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also denied in testimony before a House committee that the agency had become a “lap dog” for the car industry rather than a watchdog protecting the American public.

“From my review of the work done, if we’re talking about Toyota specifically,#x
this agency opened eight separate investigations over the time period when there were complaints about sudden acceleration,” Strickland said. “A lap dog doesn’t open eight investigations.”

The hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Beadsthe fourth congressional hearing in recent weeks involving NHTSA and the safety of Toyota cars, was meant to review the agency’s actions and whether it has enough funding, personnel and legal authority to investigate defects in the industry.

The 600-plus-person agency has plans to add 66 people under its proposed budget. #x
Strickland is also exploring whether it might need more legal authority to regulate the modern, more international auto industry.

As for new regulations, the government might make brake override systems mandatory, which would allow a driver to stop a car even if the throttle is stuck open. It is also considering requiring event data recorders,Compact fluorescent lamp, or “black boxes,” that would save information about the car’s operation in the event of a crash — a device many cars already feature.

But lawmakers have differed over threshold questions regarding the Toyota controversy, such as whether NHTSA and Toyota have failed to meet their responsibilities.

In opening his testimony, Strickland reported that traffic fatalities had fallen 8.9 percent to 33,963 in 2009, which he said was the lowest annual level since 1954.

“NHTSA’s programs work, and they work well,” he said.

The agency has faced a wave of criticism that it has been too close to the industry it regulates. #x
Two former NHTSA regulators work for Toyota’s Washington office. BeadsAnd although the agency has conducted eight investigations into reports on unintended acceleration, as Strickland noted, most of those inquiries were closed without a finding of a defect.

Reid’s wife, daughter injured in highway accident
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s wife wasHair replacement hospitalized with a broken back and neck Thursday after a tractor-trailer truck slammed into the back of the minivan in which she and their daughter were riding on an interstate highway in suburban Virginia, #xofficials said.

Reid’s wife, Landra, 69, whose injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and their daughter, Lana Barringer, 49, were taken by ambulance to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va. The daughter was released from the hospital Thursday night, hospital spokesman Tony Raker said.

Mrs. Reid was listed in serious condition, but Reid aides said she was not expected to require surgery. She was being treated in the hospital’s trauma intensive care unit, according to a staffer with the hospital’s information service, who declined to give his name.

“Mrs. Reid has a broken nose, broken back and broken neck,” Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. “Lana has a neck injury and facial lacerations.” #xManley said Mrs. Reid could feel her extremities.

Virginia State Police said Mrs. Reid and her daughter were traveling northbound on I-95 in stop-and-go traffic when their Honda Odyssey was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer loaded with rolls of plastic. The impact forced the Reid family’s minivan to rear-end a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Hair replacementwhich in turn struck a Chevrolet Cobalt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Alan W. Snader, 59, of Ohio, was charged with reckless driving, police said. He was not injured. All involved were wearing seat belts, police said.

Glenn Close has genes mapped

Glenn Close has genes mapped
American film actress Glenn Close has joined a handful of celebrities to have their genome sequenced in the name of science.
Close, who stars in the FX television series “Damages” #xand is known for movie roles including “Fatal Attraction” and “Dangerous Liaisons,”Energy saving lamps said the offer was too good to pass up.

“For me, anything that can move the science forward is worthwhile,” Close said in a telephone interview. “It’s pretty well publicized that I have mental health issues in my family.”

Close, whose family illnesses include bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, is a founder of the nonprofit group BringChange2Mind, which raises awareness about mental illness.

New sequencing technologies through companies like Illumina of San Diego, which did Close’s genome, have vastly reduced the cost of producing an entire map of the human genome — essentially the genetic recipe that makes up an individual.

Whereas the first human genome cost $3 billion and took more than a decade to produce, Illumina charges $48,000 for the kind of sequencing Close got. The company would not say whether it charged her.

Scientists say even newer technology will bring the price down to $1,000 within five years, essentially less than the cost of an advanced type of X-ray called a CT scan.

Scientists hope having the entire genetic map of a person’s DNA will begin to reveal the genetic causes of common diseases or determine a person’s risk for genetic disease.

Eventually, they predict it will become a routine part of the medical record.Energy saving lamps

The offer to get her genome sequenced came not through her own connections as a celebrity, but those of her husband, David Shaw, the founder and former head of IDEXX Laboratories Inc, #xClose said.

“Jay Flatley,Mold, who is the head of Illumina, called me up,” Close said. “He said there are very few named women who have gotten this done. I may be the first. I’m proud of that.

“In the future, I think it’s going to be something that I think will be quite #xprevalent.”

Close said she will sit down with a genetics counselor next month to get the results “and find out as much as I want to know.”

But she said if there is something in her genome that is of scientific interest, Energy saving lampsshe will consider making it public.

Panel Urges New Look at Caesarean Guidelines

Panel Urges New Look at Caesarean Guidelines
A panel of medical experts on Wednesday recommended steps to reverse a trend that has dismayed many pregnant women: the increasing difficulty of finding doctors and hospitals that will let a woman try to give birth normally if she has had a Caesarean section in the past. #x

The new recommendations came at a conference held in Bethesda, Md., by the National Institutes of Health to examine why the rate of vaginal birth after Caesarean, Dietary Supplement Manufactureror VBAC (pronounced VEE-back), has plummeted, to less than 10 percent from 28.3 percent in 1996. The repeat operations are feeding the nation’s overall Caesarean rate of 31.8 percent, which has been rising steadily for the last 11 years.

“We found the use of VBAC is certainly a safe alternative for the majority of women who’ve had one prior” Caesarean, provided that the incision was horizontal and low on the uterus, said Dr. F. Gary Cunningham, the conference chairman and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. About 70 percent of women who have had Caesareans are good candidates for trying for a normal birth,托盘, #xand 60 percent to 80 percent of those who try succeed.

Although the panel was chosen by the institutes, Dietary Supplement Manufacturerit acted independently and based its findings on technical reports and presentations by experts at the conference. It also took comments from the public.

In the past, the rule was “once a Caesarean, always a Caesarean” because of fears that the scar on the uterus would rupture during labor, which can be life-threatening for both the woman and the child. The thinking changed gradually as it became clear that women could safely have normal births after Caesarean, and an expert panel in 1980 declared vaginal birth safe for many women who had had Caesareans.

But for each woman, the decision involves a balancing act between the surgical risks from a repeat Caesarean and the risk of uterine rupture. Data presented at the conference indicated that both risks are very small. #xOver all, a vaginal birth is safer for the mother,Dietary Supplement Manufacturer but a scheduled Caesarean is slightly safer for the baby.

Protests mar groundbreaking for NJ Nets’ NYC arena
Officials broke ground Thursday on a much-delayed 22-acre development project that will bring the NBA’s New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn.

As protesters chanted and staged a mock funeral for the “soul” of Brooklyn, supporters enjoyed a lavish spread catered by developer Bruce Ratner.

“Today is a great day for Brooklyn and for the soul of Brooklyn, #xwhich is very much alive,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the biggest cheerleader of the Atlantic Yards project since it was announced in 2003.

Markowitz joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. David Paterson and hundreds of others at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the $4.9 billion project, which has been delayed by lawsuits filed by residents fighting the use of eminent domain.

Supporters say Atlantic Yards will provide jobs and economic development.

“As the buildings rise on Atlantic Yards, the joblessness rate will fall right here in Brooklyn,” Paterson said, claiming the project would create 16,000 construction jobs and 5,500 permanent jobs.

The 18,000-seat arena is to open in 2012, and construction will begin on the first of 16 residential and office buildings in 2011.

Last December, Ratner’s Forest City Ratner Cos. finalized a deal to sell 80 percent of the Nets and 45 percent of the arena to Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.

Prokhorov was not at the groundbreaking, but entertainer Jay-Z,#x an investor in the team, said, “We did it again, Brooklyn.”
The officials spoke inside a tent at the groundbreaking site, while the protesters shouted and blew whistles outside.

“What they’re going to build is a money-losing arena, maybe one or two towers and acres and acres of parking,” said Daniel Goldstein, founder of the group Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn.

His wife, Shabnam Merchant, stood Thursday in front of their home, which has been seized by the state to make way for the project,Pearl earrings, although they have yet to leave. straw bagShe held her 16-month-old daughter and a sign that said: “You’re celebrating? We live here.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton, straw bag speaking at the groundbreaking, acknowledged the displeasure of some community members but said he supported the project because it will provide jobs and contracts for minority business owners.

Forest City Ratner sold 20-year naming rights to British-based global financial services company Barclays PLC in 2007,#x and the arena will be called Barclays Center.
